2013 scholarship winner Victoria Gorman
Congratulations to EA's 2013 Ski instructor Course Scholarship winner Victoria Gorman! Victoria is off for an experience of a life time to become a ski instructor at Tahoe in the United States. Being a true Aussie her bags are packed to the rim with Aussie essentials - Vegemite, Milo and Tim Tams!
Here is her first update before she hits the slopes working as a ski instructor at a winters paradise!
My name is Victoria Gorman and I am the season 13/14 scholarship winner for EA's Ski instructor course. I am from Western Australia, which is just about as far away from the snow as you can get, but I learnt to ski while on holidays in the USA and Canada. I have recently graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Outdoor Recreation. I have a passion for the outdoors and I hope to pursue a career in the outdoor education industry.
I will be completing an EA ski Internship at Northstar-at-Tahoe, USA. This will involve three weeks of intensive training towards my PSIA ski instructor level one, a guaranteed job at a Vail resort and further training towards my PSIA level two. Going to Lake Tahoe, USA to ski instruct is a great opportunity, as I will receive excellent training and opportunities to make connections within the ski instructing industry. In addition, teaching there will be very sentimental to me as I first learnt ski in the Lake Tahoe region.
The most random item you are taking that you can’t leave behind:
A jar of Vegemite, tin of Milo and a packet of Tim Tams, these are foods in the Australian diet that I won’t find during my internship in America.
Why you are becoming an instructor?
I have always had a passion for teaching and encouraging people to get involved in outdoor recreation. Thanks to this scholarship from Educating Adventures I have been given a chance to take ski instructing to the next level. I am very excited about this opportunity and I am looking forward to the places my new qualifications will take me.
What you are looking forward to most?
It is hard to highlight just one thing I am excited about as there are so many things I am looking forward too. Lake Tahoe is one of my favourite places in world, so skiing in this region will definitely be a highlight. I am looking forward to the training for my level one prior to starting work and the avalanche course at Kirkwood that I will do after the Christmas holiday period (as part of EA's Ultimate plus internship).
What part of EA’s Ski instructor internship course are you looking forward to the most?
The aspect of the EA internship program that I appreciate the most is the guaranteed job offer at the end of your level 1 training. This will give me the opportunity to put into practice the skills I learn during training and work at a resort where I can learn from more experienced instructors
