Ski instructing - making olympic history
Have you ever wondered where ski instructing can take you? Well with the Olympics action going off at Pyeong Chang we've been wondering here at EA Ski & Snowboard training who the people are, behind the googles, big ski jackets and gear!
Did you watch the young 17-year-old, Red Gerard from the US, take out the snowboard slopestyle finals and win GOLD. It was all or nothing for him in the final run after struggling in the first two. He nailed his run, finishing it off with a backside triple cork 1440! The win not only made him a gold medal Olympian but the youngest snowboarder to become an Olympic champion! If you take any time to look into his background though you’ll find out that Red began snowboarding being pulled up the hill by the arm of his older brother. He eventually moved into his backyard with a tow rope designed just for him!
Or how about the golden girl of snowboarding, Jamie Anderson, who just blew away the competition away with an easy, laid-back run that was clean and well executed. They say you can't beat experience and she showed everyone that. Zoi Sadowsi-Synnott, a kiwi, also in the female slopestyle competition battled with the high winds and the conditions on the course, on the day. It was hard to watch all of the riders go down again and again, struggling to manage. However, one positive from Zoi’s last run was that pristine double wildcat she nailed! Commentators are saying that this isn’t the last we'll see of her and we definitely agree! Zoi’s local mountain is Wanaka’s Cardrona. She began snowboarding at about 4 years old and qualifying for the Olympics has been her dream. Zoi will also compete in the female, big air competition so keep an eye for her there!
Another New Zealand competitor in this years’ Olympics is Brittany Hawes who will be competing in the women’s ski halfpipe. Brittany is actually a ski instructor turned Olympian! She is a ski instructor at Cardrona and has completed back to back seasons at Mammoth Mountain as well. What Brittany goes to show is that spending time in the mountains, having a great understanding of the sport, and having a passion for skiing can take you as far as you want to go! We are backing one of our own as she heads into her competition and wish her all the best!
