Ski Instructor Internship in Switzerland - Katie Hodge - Blog 1

Calendar November 11th, 2014

EA have recently partnered with another fantastic big mountain resort, Grimentz Zinal, to offer full season ski instructor internships. Katie Hodge is a New Zealander who is heading to Switzerland to experience the best this resort has to offer. Although not as well known as Verbier, Grimentz packs a serious punch in regards to legendary back country skiing and Swiss culture. Check out her first blog as she builds up for the season....

I’m a sports major and outdoor enthusiast! I graduated from University earlier this year and have spent the last 6 months sailing in the Mediterranean Sea… now it’s time to throw the lines and jump ashore for an action packed winter.

Hi everyone, my name is Katie I am 21 years old and from NZ. This winter I will be taking part in the first ever EA Level 1 Ski Internship Course held in Grimentz-Zinal, Switzerland.

“It’s just me, my skis and the mountain, it feels as though nothing else matters”. These words, I recall, became the focus of skiing for me. This is the connection that I have with the sport. I have been routinely skiing every winter since I was four years old. It makes me happy, I believe in myself and become present in the moment. It has become more than just a sport for me, it’s become a lifestyle.

Sixteen years later I still find a place to ski at least once a year. A highlight for me so far will always be hiking to the Crater Lake at Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand with my big brother, this was one of the many back country hikes I've done in NZ and eventually lead me to a career path of wanting to work in one of my passions… skiing.

Living the dream is a phrase you hear quite often in ski cultures. It is the type of saying that the employees use; live the dream; work hard; play harder; we work to play. So what was I doing wanting to become a ski instructor and why did I chose to train with EA… of course it was the endless amount of time I will get to spend working and playing in snow. I was also curious to experience what it would be like to live in a remote mountain village in one of the most beautiful places in the world. I’m definitely going to miss my family and farm pets… but mum has given me her big green jumper to keep me nice and toasty this winter. Thanks Mum!

Excited? Ecstatic? Pumped? Stoked? Amped? No words can explain how I feel right now… winters coming!!
