What it's like working at

What it's like training in

Palcall Tsumagoi

When you join the Active Life team, you'll be at Palcall Tsumagoi.

At Palcall, instructors typically work 32–40 hours per week, with the season running from early December through the end of March. Most lessons are beginner-focused, and instructors can expect to teach five to six days per week. Experience with freestyle or park riding is a big plus at this location.

Instructor Training in Karuizawa.

Your training for the level 1 will take place at Karuizawa, this is on the main island of Japan and it opens early in November. You will be provided with accommodation, transport, lift passes and local support during this period and will stay in a traditional Japanese style accommodation in Karuizawa. You can expect early season conditions here and mostly man made snow - for training for the level 1 this is great as you can focus on the foundation skills required. The snow generally starts coming thick and fast in Japan from late November onwards, so you can focus on training initially and then be available to enjoy the powder later on.

Accommodation

During level 1 training and exam

This part of your program is held at Karuizawa which is nearby to Hakuba but guarantees early season snow. After an orientation in Tokyo you will transfer to Hostel style accommodation here.

Karuizawa

  • The accommodation is dorm style (bunk beds, likely 4 to a room), with use of communal common room, bathrooms, and onsens. There are also communal washers/dryers available.
  • Compulsory meal plan - this will be invoiced prior to the season start.
  • The accommodation at Karuizawa requires a mandatory meal plan for all participants, which falls outside of our course inclusions. This is due to the accommodation having a commercial kitchen and lacking self-catering facilities.
  • The meal plan includes breakfast and dinner for each day you are in Karuizawa, from arrival through to when you depart to transfer to your placement resort after the level 1 exam. Meals will be a range of healthy options, and you can expect a continental style breakfast with some Japanese elements. Dinners will be traditional Japanese - eg miso, rice, vegetarian option, pork, fish, chicken.
  • This is a real bonus during the training period as it means you don't need to worry about prepping meals during your training/exam period, allowing you to focus on other things and enjoy communal meals together with your group each day!
  • Transport to training days and exams is provided.
Once the training and exam are completed you will arrive at staff accommodation at Palcall Tsumagoi, Japan

Staff are housed in dorm-style accommodation for approximately ¥6,000 per month, with an optional meal plan available for about ¥400 per day. The total monthly cost of living averages around ¥30,000, making this a very affordable setup for a ski season in Japan.

*The above is an indicative based on last season and is subject to change based on availability and updates to pricing

Program Manager

EA Ski and Snowboard Training want you to have the best season possible in Japan.

Once in Japan you'll become part of the ski school staff at location and will have guidance from senior ski school employees in resort.
